Giovanna, Caterina e Vittorio si conoscono
e crescono insieme nell’Istituto per i figli della guerra
di Portogruaro: sono bambini orfani ma non orfani,
separati dalle madri, ignorati dai padri naturali
e respinti da quelli putativi, accolti da un pugno
di religiosi illuminati che cercano di dar loro una
famiglia. Poi le loro strade si dividono: Giovanna
viene adottata da una ricca coppia di Padova
