Edwin O. Reischauer, nato a Tokyo nel 1910, visse in Giappone fino al 1927. Entrò a Harvard come docente nel 1966, dopo essere stato ambasciatore degli USA in Giappone dal 1961 al 1966. Diplomato all’Oberlin College nel 1931 e laureato a Harvard nel 1939, divenne professore incaricato nel 1945 e ordinario di storia giapponese nel 1950. Durante la Seconda guerra mondiale fu nel Military Intelligence Service e nel War Department General Staff. Morì nel 1990.
